Ashanti Suriyam

Ashanti began her dance training in Perth in Jazz, Tap, Ballet and Flamenco.

At the age of 18 Ashanti completed her Commonwealth Society Teachers of Dance Theatrical Student Teachers Diploma, and later completed the Spanish Dance Institute Teaching certificate.

Ashanti spent a year in Toronto , Canada where she began training in Hip Hop with teachers like Luther Brown. Here she also had the opportunity to dance in music videos of local Canadian artists, and dance as tap soloist in the opening act of the Canadian Urban Music Awards (hosted by Russell Peters) choreographed by Jae Blaze.

Ashanti was the first non-North American to successfully audition for the “BE DISCOVERED” Los Angeles talented dancers program where she trained under Shane Sparks, Menina Fortunato, and Grover Dale, just to name a few.

As performer Ashanti was employed as a dancer by Bent Knee Creative, performing in several corporate events on Perth’s social calendar. In 2008 Ashanti was accepted onto the Greenroom Entertainment Agency casting books, where she has been a featured dancer in many shows around Perth.  During this time she has also had the opportunity to dance back up for international artist Samantha Jade.

Ashanti regularly travels to New York, L.A, Canada, the UK, and the East Coast to participate in workshops to remain inspired and to keep her outlook on dance relevant.  Together with her business partner Selina Hoo, she is also proprieter of Realise Energise Dance, a dance promotions company responsible for bringing international choreographers such as Luther Brown, Popin Pete, Mr. Wiggles, Shotyme, Tweetie, Brandon Barton, Laura Edwards, Ava Bernstein and many more.

Ashanti is currently in New York, dancing with the Victorio Korjhan Flamenco performance group, and studying tap and theatre jazz under Alan Tolson, Derek Grant, Diana Laurenson, and JT Horenstein to name a few.

With Selina as her business partner, Ashanti came to be part owner of the Dance Workshop in 2011, and hopes to continue the legacy of the Dance Workshop for another 30 plus years.
